How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi at Home
Speed up your home internet with a simple step-by-step Wi-Fi troubleshooting checklist.
Start with the easiest checks
Slow Wi-Fi is often caused by a weak signal, network congestion, or router settings that need attention. Before changing advanced settings, restart your modem and router, then reconnect your device.
Move the router to a better location
Place the router in a central, open area instead of behind a TV stand or inside a cabinet. Walls, metal objects, and appliances can reduce signal quality.
Best placement tips
- Keep the router off the floor.
- Avoid placing it near microwaves and cordless phones.
- Position antennas at different angles if your model supports it.
Reduce network congestion
If many devices are connected at the same time, speeds can drop. Disconnect devices you are not using and prioritize your work laptop or streaming device when your router supports quality of service settings.
Check for firmware updates
Router manufacturers often release updates that improve speed, stability, and security. Log in to the router dashboard and apply the latest firmware when available.
Test before replacing hardware
Run a speed test near the router and then from the room where you notice the slowdown. If the connection is still poor close to the router, your internet plan or router hardware may be the bottleneck.
